Well, a Happy New Year to you all and what better way to start 2014 than with a few images from a lovely little book I picked up on the Isle of Wight, from whence R and I have just returned. This is A Candle for St Georgios by Mary Drewery (Chatto, Boyd & Oliver, London: 1969) and illustrated really rather well by Reginald Gray. I can find nothing about him in my books but the blurb on the jacket of this one, in place of telling us anything useful about him, just remarks that he also illustrated another of the books by this author. Regular readers will know that I have a liking for this style of illustration, so prevalent in the 50s, 60s, and 70s and it appears regularly on Front Free Endpaper: what I still don't have is a name to describe this mid-century style.
