Michael's Crag by Grant Allen

It's not rare and its not particularly expensive but it is a wonder and more people should have one on their shelves. This is Michael's Crag, a new story by Grant Allen, or at least it was new in 1893 when first published. The wonder of this book though are the 350 marginal illustrations in silhouette by Francis and Alec Carruthers Gould: often two or three to a page. It's like an early form of graphic novel. There are a number of books from this period, or perhaps slightly later, which are billed as "a novel in woodcuts" and they are definitely seen as the precursor to the notion of a graphic novel. This one, not so much perhaps, but a very enjoyable book.
